In semester 1 of 2007/08 I will be teaching the course Modelling with Fluids (MATH3501) in the School of Mathematics at the University of Leeds. Official details about the course can be found on the departmental webpages, here.
Fluid mechanics deals with the motion of fluids such as water, air and blood. A different mathematical formulation is needed to treat fluids as distinct from 'rigid bodies', for fluids can change their shape as they move. This course sets up the basic equations of fluid mechanics and uses them to consider mathematical models for e.g. the pollution caused by a factory emitting waste into a river, and the forces which keep a 400 ton jumbo jet in the air.
